THE VILLAGE POND – “Walkington Mere”
The pond is the premier icon of Walkington and a focus of interest and pride in the village. The years take their toll on it and on its surrounding trees and margins and the Pond Committee do stirling work in an entirely voluntary capacity to keep it looking and working well. Last year a lot was done through hard work to try to tidy the eastern end and the seating area was improved and new fencing installed. The Committee approached the Parish Council pointing out that much more could be done to make the eastern end safer and more attractive for the increasing numbers of visitors to the area. In addition it was felt that the water quality did not appear to be supporting the amount of wildlife that had been seen in the past.
The Parish Council therefore looked to call in some expert, qualified and experienced advice and have employed the consultancy who carried out a successful project recently for Swanland where much work has now been completed to improve a pond with similar characteristics to ours. The scheme that has been produced for us is set out below and residents are asked to let our Clerk have any observations upon it before the last day of February 2017 so that responses can be considered at the meeting to be held on 14 March 2017.
The Parish Council will also need to consult the East Riding Planning and Highways departments as well as the Water Authority before deciding whether a scheme can be finalised and then submitted for grant aid. Obviously a substantial proportion of the cost will fall on residents but the Parish Council is determined to preserve this vital asset.
We want to improve and secure the appearance and health of the pond for future generations to enjoy and this is your opportunity to make comments that we can take into account in deciding on how to progress to the next stage.
Please send any views to the Clerk to the Council.
