On Sunday 23rd July Walkington Bowls Club played host to the Yorkshire Bowling Association 2017 Mens Championship Finals. The weather was unfortunately unkind with a torrential downpour in the afternoon. Although the bowling green flooded around the edges, after a short interval, it recovered sufficiently to allow the competition to resume.

There were approximately 32 competitors in a programme of 10 finals. In two championship finals, Walkington Bowls Club, were represented by Graham Stephenson and Liam Creaser. Graham Stephenson was a finalist in the Men’s Over 65’s Singles Championship which he won in some style 21 – 11.  While 16 years old Liam Creaser won the Junior Final (Under 25) Championship by an equally impressive margin of 22 – 7. This is an amazing result for the club, which judging by its size, must be punching well above its weight to use a sporting cliché.

Behind the scenes, the Walkington Ladies provided refreshments throughout the day with teas, coffees and a delightful variety of cakes, fruit loaves and sandwiches, enough to keep any bowler content even in the rain.

The cups were presented by Owen Baron, a past president of Yorkshire Bowling Association. Congratulations to Graham and Liam and all those at Walkington Bowls Club who made such a success of the day.

One Response to Yorkshire Bowling Association 2017 Mens Championship Finals
  1. Thank you Keith for a super write up on the finals day. The event went very well.
It also dispelled the myth that it is an ‘old man’s game. Our youngest member Liam Creaser is 16 and a Yorkshire champion and a great credit to our club.
I’m not sure that many residents know what a gem we have in the village.
The Bowling club is one of the largest clubs in the area but there is always room for anyone wanting to join at what ever level.
