When did you last hear a cuckoo? My wife and I last heard, and actually saw a cuckoo, on Risby Lane probably about 5 or 6 years ago. It was early evening and we had almost reached Halfpenny Cottage when we heard the songbird over in the woods. Once you hear a cuckoo you are transfixed to the spot and listen intently to the unmistakable sound. We then watched the bird as it flew over Risby Lane and started its call again, away across the fields. The call of the cuckoo is one of the characteristic sounds of spring.
Then yesterday, we parked the car in the Beverley car park next to M&S. As we headed towards M&S, with our masks and gloves, we both stopped dead in our tracks, at the sound of a cuckoo. Scarcely able to believe it, we scanned the rooftops in search of the elusive bird. The sound was so near and so clear it was hard to understand why we couldn’t see it.
Then a guy walked past from the cash machine and said ‘It’s my phone’. He had the call of a cuckoo, as his ringtone, on his phone. Sadly, it remains 5 or 6 years since we’ve heard a real cuckoo!
