Last Friday (13th,) the Christmas round of the Village Quiz took place, along with the All Hallows Church Christmas Raffle for the Church fabric fund and what an extraordinary night it was. The teams taking part in the quiz were The Pantomime Players, the Awesome Foursome and the Sherwood and Waudby Charity. Each team is made up of four contestants, but unfortunately, Sherwood, only had one person who bravely volunteered, for the sake of the quiz, to continue on his own. Talk about David and two Goliaths! Well I think you may guess what was to come.

Matt Jenkins was the guy’s name and of course the audience instantly were very supportive and cheered loudly his correct answers. But let me take a step back.

Our usual quizmaster, Dennis Johnson, was away performing a family  Christmas present delivery service, so  Neviile Pailing stepped in, to ask the questions and Anne Brookes kept the scores. Pam Hardy provided a very good set of questions with something for everyone. There were song titles with bits missing; a round where the answers started with the letter W;  questions where the answer was made up of letters from the word Walkington and usually, a round on sporting rules and equipment.

Back to Matt. The quiz is made up of nine rounds and Matt was leading up to the seventh round, by the eighth round, he was equal with the Awesome Foursome, both on 48 points. However, in the final round it was the Pantomime Players who snatched victory. The final score were the Pantomime Players on 54 points, the Awesomes on 53 and Sherwood and Waudby Charity on 52.

The Pantomime Players: David, Brian, Gary and Ben

I cannot remember a village quiz where the outcome was so close with only 2 points separating the teams. However, obviously, Matt stole the show, and the audience where loud in their appreciation of his sporting instinct and his overall performance. Well done to the Pantomime Players and all who took part.

The Sherwood and Waudby Charity go straight through to the Grand Final as the highest scoring losing team. The Pantones Players and the Awesomes still have to fight it out in further rounds. The next round of the quiz will be held in the Village Hall on 17th January 2020.
