The Specsavers Walkington 10km and was held last Friday evening, 9th July 2021 under the limitations of Covid regulations. As a consequence the numbers taking part in this year’s race was much reduced even though 502 runners finished the main 10k race with 84 completing the Fun Run.

Both races started with groups of three going off every 5 seconds in a staggered start which meant that rather than the initial mad dash at the start, runners set off more sedately clutching their water bottles and setting their watches.

It was pleasing to see so many youngsters taking part with 59, of the Fun Runners, being under 16.

Runners Waiting at the 10K Start

This year the entries were mainly local with runners representing clubs from all over East Yorkshire, whereas in recent years, the race has attracted running clubs from all over Yorkshire.

The 10K race also attracted competitors for Humber Triathletes, Humberside And Lincolnshire Orienteers, the splendidly named, UKRunChat Running Club and Fitmums and Friends.

The 10K race was won by Jonathan Frost from East Hull Harriers in a time of 33.07 minutes.

The evening was warm with a sprinkling of rain at the start and as usual there were a lot of spectators positioned on Little Weighton Road, with some holding what looked like an alcoholic beverage. You know who you are.

Once again thanks to all those at Beverley Athletic Club (the starters, the race marshalls, the time recorders etc) for organising another very successful Specsavers Walkington 10K and Fun Run.
