The Walkington Bowls Club Finals Weekend, the biggest annual sporting event in the village, has just been completed. The weekend is the culmination of nine club competitions run throughout the bowling season, which runs from mid April to mid September.

The weather was as it was, good for the start of the weekend bowling on Friday, then mostly cloudy with some short periods of rain for the other two days. The weather may cause some delay but didn’t blunt the competitive edge of the contestants who provided some fine bowling performances.

There were some exciting matches for the spectators, especially the Mens Pairs, where Chris Day and Maurice Sylvester were down 11 – 1 before pulling back the score to eventually win. However, the prize for the most exciting match goes to the  two ladies taking part in the Ladies Singles. This was the last match of the weekend and Nikki Mitchell and Betty Bentley where tied at 20 – 20 and Nikki won with the final wood. That’s the way to end the weekend’s completion.

This is the fifth year the walkington-life blog has covered the event and as always the contestants and spectators were very friendly and happy to explain some of the nuances of bowling to the uninitiated, like myself.

The Bowls Club has such a wonderful setting in the heart of the village with the clubhouse and the surrounding grounds all looking in fine shape. The hanging baskets and flower beds were all very colourful and evidence of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes all year round.

This friendly and thriving club has approximately 100 members  drawn from the village and the surrounding area and actively encourages people to try their hand at bowling. The club holds open days each season with all the equipment provided to encourage visitors to  ‘Give Bowling, A Go.’ The blog will keep you informed of the next open day and one thing is for sure; you will be made very welcome.
